Someone other than me, who shall remain nameless, chose to wait until the day before the last day to renew licenses (for the year — and yes, in most instances we could have done it on line, but not this once).
We drove to the nearby tavern to have a quick lunch – and they were not open weekdays for lunch. Already heading in the direction toward the county office, we went the many miles there next. On this day they had all license types in one long snaking line, reminiscent of Disney World. We got within three people of the front – a nice woman came up to speed up the process, oops, we were handed paperwork to take to the city FIRST. (Not the way the previous county did it.)
It was well after two and we had not had lunch – and had chosen to have Starbucks instead of breakfast.
We drive all the way East and North to get to the city, see few parking spaces, grab the first we see. Of course, it is hot and muggy and I despise heat. The city blocks are numbered differently than normal. Two grumbling stomachs entertain us for three sweaty blocks. It is only around three – and they are closed. They picked this week to close at noon – the entire week before the end of the year for licenses.
So, we walk to the sandwich shop she suggested and it smelled, the other one was a bakery and had little out except for more pastries. I needed food, real food. Now four blocks back to the car. We jump in and drive back to an almost deserted, but rather upscale restaurant – Amici Ristorante & Bar. I asked the waiter to have the chef make me something vegetarian that was the least amount of effort at that odd hour.
Rigatoni with tomatoes, asparagus, spinach, mushrooms, bufala mozzarella, etc. It was great. Leon had Tonno Taormina. So, our poorly scheduled day, our missed lunch, the office closed: it all lead to a new restaurant! And we got the scoop on the quietest nights to return.
Some day, someone will remember I am right often — before they try the other way. Yeah, right. But, you know what, we actually had a great day.
