On the tenth I wrote about purchasing my two newest toys, also known as important business equipment: a single label printer, Dymo LabelWriter 400 Turbo, and a portable scanner, Fujitsu ScanSnap S300M (Mac version). I wondered if they would be yet another stressor or great toys, I mean business aids.
Yes, the LabelWriter was a bit of a stressor the first few minutes – in part because I didn’t read the directions. But after my mini fit thrown (to no audience), it worked/works well for my purpose, to print single labels rather than 30 to a page at a time. It is capable of doing a whole lot more, including printing postage stamps, but I bought it primarily for single labels. The label size is a bit larger than our thirty to a page labels, but it also adds automatically the bar code and I have just downloaded the free software that verifies the address meets Post Office standards.
The business card software that comes with it, Card Iris, does not work all that well, but I would rather correct what it doesn’t read correctly than type in the entire business card – and it does let me add each one to the address book in our Macs, so I will use it, too.
I’m sure the Post Office appreciates having envelopes with legible print rather than my illegible scrawl and I don’t want to scare off the envelope receivers either.
Our Fujitsu scanner is a joy! It is so quiet! It is so small, I put it in front of my monitor. (Click on the link to see it opened and held in a woman’s hand.) It scans automatically to a .pdf file which is what I use to fax online and though the HP did as well, it is so very much faster not just in the scan per page time, but in the set up. Then there is the simple fact it scans up to ten pages at a time, and our HP scanner requires scanning each paper singly, lid up, lid down, lid up, lid down, and so on.
The only down side to too many computer accessories… they need 2.0 USB ports.
Dwight Silverman found a perfect one made by Belkin. It takes up no space on our desks because it will sit on the iMac’s base. I can get by without it now… I think. We just might be able to resolve the two (literally) few port issues by reading a certain set of directions. Rats, my excuse to buy may not be valid, yet.
Yes, Leon may regret he ever let his cheap date* become his expensive business partner, but after all those years of working for a huge corporation, yet using old technology, I’m ready for the best I can afford – or almost afford, especially if it works well and makes work go quickly.
*(money wise guys, not the other, I didn’t drink often, saved him a fortune in that way)

I gotta say… those look pretty cool.
