If only I’d had my camera

Yes, missed opportunity – twice – I forgot about the phone on the iPhone, too. Remember my irate letter to my iMac last week? Well, After repairing permissions and repairing the disk under the phone guidance of Apple support – AND archiving and reinstalling Leopard – the iMac was still going into slow motion and I had to restart several times. Then it decided to get creative: to rearrange letters, adding spaces and symbols on some words on both file names of items on my desk tops and on the little boxes that pop up when you tell the computer to do something.

In addition to that the photo on my desktop that is supposed to change every five minutes – stayed put. I had the presence of mind to try a second command and take a screen shot of the desktop. Check out the words in bold text if you can read them:

Apple Mystery

Needless to say I was back on the phone with Apple Support and they passed me on to a “Product Specialist” who in turn suggested I take it straight to the Apple Store genius. Leon rearranged his schedule and lugged the heavy 20″ computer down the three flights of stairs here and into the mall.

That is where I needed the camera… when I popped the screen shot up on my computer after describing the problem, the look on the face of the genius was priceless as he told me, “You are right, I would NEVER have believed you if you had not taken the picture.” Basically, the same response and expression from his co-worker, and later on the face of the Genius “who knew more” that was pulled from the back room.

Of course, I couldn’t duplicate it since I had no clue why it happened, after all, I am not the genius. (I know, you already figured that out.) They ran a test or two, sent info and the pic to the engineers (I thought) and gave me the case number so I could check on it, assuring me if they didn’t tell me their conclusions, just get back with them and they would find out for me.

Today, another conversation and tests while speaking to Apple Support and the “Product Specialist” — neither had a clue, I even emailed the photo to him. Turns out, it was never (?) referred to an engineer, only to Support, so the product specialist referred it them this afternoon.

In the meantime, I’ve made copies of the important stuff and put it on my laptop — in preparation to completely erase the hard drive without archiving and reinstalling — pending the engineer’s take on it.

I have to admit, it was ALMOST worth the hassle just to see the expressions on the three faces at the store. The five of us had great laughs over it…. I’m still laughing, but ONLY because so far I have lost nothing, but time.

Ay Marcia, good that you have a sense of humour. I have a mac laptop in for repair here in Mexico. It’s frustrating. We have no apple stores and the man who says he knows how has a day job in real estate. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Sometimes the problems arise because of the suffocating here, we have here in the summer. Good luck!
